Lohri is a Punjabi festival that marks the end of winter.

The Punjabi festival of Lohri is celebrated to mark the end of winter. This year, it was celebrated on January 13th. Lohri is celebrated across India, with most celebrations taking place in Punjab and Haryana. In 2019, the Indian government declared that all government offices would be closed on Lohri and Republic Day (January 26th). The celebrations include people lighting bonfires and burning effigies of Ravana and Lord Mahavira, who are believed to represent evil forces. The celebration also includes folk dances, songs and food such as roti with ghee (clarified butter) or kheer (a sweet rice pudding).

Lohri is also known as Makar Sankranti in some parts of India. Makar Sankranti marks the transition from winter to spring in Hindu culture. It’s a time when Hindus believe that the sun enters Capricorn, which signals a change in season. It’s also an important time for farmers who plant their crops during this period.
