The conflict between Ukraine and Russia has been going on since 2014. It is a territorial, political, and military confrontation in the Donbass region of Ukraine. The situation began when pro-Russian President Viktor Yanukovych was ousted from power in February 2014 following the Euromaidan revolution. This led to protests in Crimea that led to its annexation by Russia, which was then followed by a war between Russian-backed separatists and Ukrainian forces that continues today.

What caused the conflict?

There are many reasons for this conflict, but one of the main reasons is that it is a territorial dispute over Crimea.

Crimea is an autonomous republic within Ukraine located on the northern coast of the Black Sea. It became part of Russia after World War II when it was given to them by Joseph Stalin.

The territory also holds a major port at Sevastopol which houses Russia’s Black Sea Fleet.

In early 2014, Crimea held a referendum which saw 96% vote in favour of joining with Russia.

Russia then officially annexed Crimea in March 2014.

Ukraine and most other countries do not recognise this annexation as legitimate.

This began what is now known as the War in Donbass where pro-Russian separatists declared independence from Ukraine and have been fighting Ukrainian forces ever since.

There are still thousands of Russian troops stationed along the border with Ukraine who continue to support their separatist allies.<\/div>
