The North Sea has been a vital part of the UK economy since the 1960s. But it’s also one of the most dangerous places to work in the world. The Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy says more than 1,000 people have died there over the last 50 years. It’s estimated that over half of those deaths were due to drowning.
But while there have been improvements in safety standards, particularly since 2010, many offshore workers still feel vulnerable.
