The flag is at half-mast today to mark the death of former Prime Minister Gordon Brown.

The Union Jack was flying at half-mast on October 27th, after the death of former Prime Minister Gordon Brown. The Labour politician served as the country’s Prime Minister from 2007 to 2010, and was also Chancellor of the Exchequer from 1997 to 2007. Brown became a Member of Parliament in 1983 and served as Shadow Chancellor under Tony Blair until 1994. In that year, he was elected Leader of the Labour Party and became Leader of the Opposition in 1995. He won a landslide victory in 1997, becoming Prime Minister and ending 18 years of Conservative rule.

Gordon Brown announced his resignation as leader on May 11th 2010, following his party’s loss in that year’s general election. The result left him with only 258 seats out of 650 seats in Parliament, making it one of Labour’s worst defeats ever. Following his resignation, he returned to being an MP for Kirkcaldy and Cowdenbeath until 2015 when he resigned from Parliament after 30 years.
