The Egg Bowl is the name given to the annual college football game between Mississippi State University and the University of Mississippi. The two teams have met more than 100 times, with Ole Miss holding a 60-40-6 advantage in their head-to-head series. The game has been played every year since 1946, making it one of college football’s longest running uninterrupted rivalries. It’s also known as “the other Iron Bowl,” because it has often been referred to as one of America’s greatest sports rivalries.

Why is it called the Egg Bowl?

The name “Egg Bowl” was first used in 1952 by sports writer Bill Ferris. According to Ferris, he was trying to think up an attention grabbing headline for a story on a baseball rivalry between Ole Miss and Mississippi State when he came up with “the egg bowl.” The term quickly caught on as a nickname for this rivalry and eventually became its official name.
