Reddit was closed to the public on October 27th, 2021. The website went down shortly after it announced that it had been hacked and that user information had been compromised. Reddit users were directed to a message from CEO Steve Huffman, who said that Reddit was working hard to fix the issue and that users should keep an eye on r/redditdown in case of updates. While the message is now gone from r/redditdown, it’s clear from comments left by other users that Reddit remained offline for several hours following this announcement.
The hacking incident wasn’t exactly new for Reddit. The website suffered a breach in 2007 when a hacker obtained passwords and email addresses for many of its users. However, this time around the situation is much more serious than before. Not only did hackers obtain access to user emails and passwords (which they used to post spam), but they also gained access to private messages as well as their encrypted or hashed passwords.
