Memorial Day is a holiday in the United States and Canada, held on the last Monday of May.

Memorial Day is a public holiday observed on the last Monday of May. It commemorates those who have died in military service for their country, and is also known as Decoration Day. It originated after the American Civil War, when it was founded by General John Logan as Decoration Day. The modern Memorial Day is not just about honoring those who have died serving their country, but also to honor all those who are currently serving in the armed forces.

The first Memorial Day was observed on May 30th 1868 by General John Logan in his home town of Newark, New Jersey. He chose this date because it was the anniversary of when General George Washington’s Continental Army had retreated from New York City after being defeated by British troops during 1776. On this day all citizens were encouraged to decorate the graves of soldiers who had died during war with flowers.

What does Memorial Day mean?
