The first section of the Merseyrail Northern Line was opened in July 2022.

Merseyrail, the rail network serving Liverpool and its surrounding areas, has been hit by a series of delays on the Northern Line since mid-2021. The first part of the Merseyrail Northern Line was opened in July 2022 and provided direct services from Bootle to Liverpool Central Station. Since then, however, the line has been beset by technical problems and service delays. This is due to a number of factors including outdated trains and poor infrastructure that have led to overcrowding and cancellations.

A report published by Network Rail on September 10th revealed that there were three main reasons for these issues: outdated trains; inadequate infrastructure; and poor management. The report also found that passengers were being inconvenienced as a result of these issues, with many having to wait for replacement buses or other modes of transport instead.
