Instagram has been asking users for their date of birth, but the app is not clear about why.

Instagram has started asking users for their date of birth, but the app is not clear about why it needs this information. The new feature was first spotted by TechCrunch, which notes that it appears to be rolling out to some users on iOS and Android. While Instagram says that the information will be used to personalise your experience on the app, there are no details about how it will do this.

TechCrunch reports that Instagram began showing a prompt for date of birth in September 2018. The prompt would appear when you first open the app and would give you three options: “I don’t want to share my birthday”, “show my birthday” or “cancel”. If you tap “show my birthday” then your date of birth will be displayed in your profile.

If you tap “I don’t want to share my birthday” then Instagram won’t display your date of birth in your profile. If you tap “cancel” then Instagram won’t ask again.
