Google is laying off employees in a major restructuring of its business.

In a memo to staff, Google CEO Sundar Pichai said the company was reorganising into two divisions: one focused on its core advertising business and another for other bets. In a statement, Google said the move will create “fewer layers, greater accountability and increased responsibility.”

The cuts will hit all areas of the company but will affect fewer than 2% of employees. The company did not specify how many people would be affected.

“This new structure is designed to drive greater accountability, encourage boldness, and make it easier for us to work as one team,” Pichai wrote in his email. “And it is another step toward becoming the Google you want as your partner.”
