The price of gas has reached a record high in the UK, according to the Office for National Statistics. The average cost of a kilowatt hour of electricity was 30.7 pence in September 2019, up from 29.5 pence in August and from 27.8 pence in September 2018.

This means that British households are paying more for their energy than they have since records began in 2004. The latest increase was driven by an increase in wholesale gas prices, which jumped by almost 50% over the past year alone.
