Disney is facing a boycott from viewers after the company announced it would no longer show advertisements for junk food on its children’s channels.

Disney has been forced to cancel several of its movies, including Frozen 2, after fans decided to boycott the company in response to its decision to ban junk food ads. The entertainment giant announced that it would no longer air ads for unhealthy products on its children’s channels. However, this decision was met with criticism from viewers who argued that Disney should not be in charge of deciding what is healthy and what isn’t.

The news came after several celebrities took a stand against Disney over their continued relationship with the National Rifle Association (NRA). They include George Clooney, Julianne Moore and director Judd Apatow. It was also revealed that Disney had donated $1 million to the NRA Foundation in 2017.

What is the boycott?

A protest movement against a person or group because of their politics or actions. Protests are generally peaceful but can turn violent if people feel strongly enough about an issue. The most famous example of a boycott is probably Coca-Cola’s 1985 advert featuring American football star Mean Joe Green and his coke bottle counterpart. This commercial caused outrage among anti-nuclear activists who launched a nationwide campaign against Coca-Cola.

What are some examples of boycotts?

The 2019 Women’s March saw more than 1 million people across America protesting Donald Trump’s presidency as part of a national strike.
Other examples include:
The Montgomery Bus Boycott – In 1955, Rosa Parks refused to give up her seat on a bus in Montgomery, Alabama, sparking an 11-month boycott which ended segregation on public transport.
The Woolworths Boycott – The South African anti-apartheid movement led by Archbishop Desmond Tutu called for consumers to stop shopping at Woolworths stores until they withdrew from South Africa.
The McStrike – Workers at McDonald’s restaurants across Britain went on strike in 2018 demanding better pay and conditions.
The 2018 Women’s March – More than 3 million people marched worldwide following Donald Trump’s inauguration as US President.
