Baltimore is a city with a long and storied history. From its founding in 1729 to its status as the first capital of the United States, Baltimore has seen it all. The city has also been home to many famous people, including Edgar Allan Poe and Babe Ruth. It’s also been featured in many movies and TV shows over the years, including House of Cards and Homicide: Life on the Street. As such, it’s no surprise that Baltimore has several nicknames.

Charm City was coined by sportswriter Frank Deford in a 1971 article for Sports Illustrated magazine about Baltimore’s love of baseball. Deford chose Charm City because he felt that it was more interesting than “the town that fun forgot” or “the city of churches” – two other nicknames given to Baltimore over the years.
