The only country that completely bans abortion is the Vatican, which recently had a change of leadership from Pope Benedict XVI to Pope Francis. The country of Malta also has strict laws regarding abortion, but allows it if the mother’s life is at risk.
In most countries, there are some circumstances under which an abortion can be performed legally. For example, some countries allow abortions when the pregnancy puts the mother’s life at risk or when she has been raped. In other countries, there are exceptions for women who are underage or whose fetuses have serious health problems.
Why was Ireland’s Eighth Amendment passed?
In 1983, Ireland’s Eighth Amendment was passed by referendum with 67% of voters voting in favor of it. The amendment stated that an unborn child had a right to life equal to that of its mother’s and prohibited abortion in all cases except for those where there was a “real and substantial risk” to the mother’s life.
The Eighth Amendment passed after much debate about whether or not it would actually prevent abortions from happening altogether. It did not stop abortions from happening entirely because women could travel abroad to have them done legally and safely.
A referendum on repealing this amendment was held on May 25th 2018 and 66% voted yes to repeal it while 34% voted no.
