Friendship Day is a holiday celebrated on July 30th, and the date of the celebration changes every year. The holiday was created by President John F. Kennedy in 1963 as a way to promote international friendship and understanding. The United Nations has made it an official holiday, meaning that it’s observed in all 193 member states. Each country chooses its own way to celebrate Friendship Day, with some countries holding large festivals or parades.

Why is Friendship Day celebrated?

The United Nations describes Friendship Day as “a day dedicated to celebrating friendship and community around the world”. It was created by President John F. Kennedy in 1963 after he visited with children who had been injured in an accident at a Belgian amusement park. One of these children gave him a small wooden plaque that read “Nous sommes amis” (We are friends). This inspired him to declare July 30th as International Friendship Day, which would be observed annually by Americans.
