The country is hoping to join the EU by 2025.

Ukraine is hoping to join the European Union by 2025, according to the country’s president. Volodymyr Zelensky has said that he wants to sign an association agreement with the EU as soon as possible, with a view to joining the bloc within a decade. Zelensky was elected in April 2019 and has made it clear that he wants Ukraine to be more closely aligned with Europe. The country had previously been negotiating a trade deal with Russia instead of trying to join the EU.

Zelensky said: “I want Ukraine and our people, who have always been pro-European, to finally become part of this big family.” He added: “We will start negotiations about this association agreement immediately after I take office.”
