The Grammy-winning singer-songwriter says he wears the balaclava to protect his identity.

When Gregory Porter performs live, he is often seen wearing a balaclava. This is not because he has a secret identity or because he wants to hide his face from the public. Instead, the Grammy-winning singer-songwriter says that he wears it to protect his identity.

“I wear a balaclava on stage because I don’t want people to see my face,” Porter told The Guardian in 2018. “It’s like an out of body experience for me when I perform and I want people to be able to focus on that rather than who I am.”

Porter has also been open about why he wears the balaclava in interviews and on social media, saying that it allows him to feel more comfortable while performing. “Wearing a mask helps me feel more comfortable when I perform so that I can focus on connecting with my audience rather than worrying about who might be watching me,” Porter said in an interview with Billboard in 2018.
