When a horse flicks its head, it is called “observation”. This behaviour is also known as “head-tossing” or “head-shaking”. It is often used by horses to help them get rid of flies or other insects.
When a horse flicks its head, it can actually rotate its ears independently from the rest of its body. A horse can move each ear independently of the other ear up to 180 degrees, which means that a horse can turn one ear all the way around to face backwards! This helps the horse get rid of insects that are on its face or in its ears.
