Tina Turner lived in Switzerland because she had dual citizenship.

American singer Tina Turner was born in 1939 and went on to become one of the most famous singers of all time. In the 1960s, she was a backup singer for Ike Turner and his band The Kings of Rhythm, who were signed to the record label Sue Records. Tina later left the group to embark on a solo career with the help of Ike, but when their marriage fell apart in 1976, she moved to Switzerland to be closer to her son.

Tina Turner’s son Craig Raymond Raymond was born in 1963 while Tina was still married to Ike. Although they divorced five years later, Ike gained custody of Craig and kept him away from his mother for years. In 1976, after a failed attempt at reconciliation with Ike and a court battle over custody rights, Tina moved her young son out of the US and into Switzerland. It’s not known exactly why she chose this country as opposed to any other European nation or even another country outside Europe altogether. However, it is known that Craig has dual citizenship thanks to his Swiss father.

Switzerland is located in central Europe and shares its borders with Germany, France, Italy and Liechtenstein. It’s home to around 8 million people from more than 200 different nationalities who speak four official languages: German (63%), French (20%), Italian (6%) and Romansh (0.5%). As well as being home to world-famous ski resorts like St Moritz and Davos Platz, Switzerland is also known for its chocolate industry which produces some of the world’s best chocolates including Lindt & Sprüngli.
