Roy Orbison was known for his sunglasses and the reason why is revealed in new documentary.

Music legend Roy Orbison’s trademark dark glasses were more than just a fashion statement, according to a new documentary. The British-born singer-songwriter was diagnosed with glaucoma at the age of 30 and wore dark glasses for much of his life. Now, a new documentary about the star has shed light on his reasons for wearing the shades.

Why did Roy Orbison wear dark glasses?

Glaucoma is an eye condition that can lead to blindness if left untreated. It is caused by an increase in pressure inside the eye and can cause severe pain and vision loss if left untreated. It can be caused by several factors including high blood pressure, diabetes or even stress. Orbison was diagnosed with glaucoma when he was 30 years old after experiencing severe headaches while on tour in Australia in 1961. He was told that he would eventually go blind without treatment but decided to delay having surgery until after he finished his current tour.

What happened to Roy Orbison’s eyes?

Roy Orbison underwent surgery to have a lens implant inserted into one of his eyes, which corrected some of the vision loss from glaucoma. However, this only corrected some of the damage caused by glaucoma, leaving him with limited vision in one eye.

In 1961 when Roy Orbison toured Australia he experienced severe headaches while on tour and had to cancel several shows because he couldn’t perform due to them.
After returning home from Australia it took him three years before he could find someone who would operate on him.
He finally found a doctor who agreed to operate but said that if there were any complications during or after surgery that it could lead to complete blindness.
The operation took place at Birmingham’s Queen Elizabeth Hospital in 1965.
During surgery one of his eyes had a lens implant inserted which helped correct some of the vision loss from glaucoma.
After recovering from surgery Roy kept wearing sunglasses because they helped hide his damaged eye.
