The crash occurred in the early hours of October 27th, when the spacecraft was traveling to the Moon.

A SpaceX rocket carrying a crew capsule that could take astronauts to the International Space Station (ISS) has crashed during a test flight, according to NASA. The Crew Dragon vehicle suffered an anomaly during its first test flight on Thursday, which ended with it crashing into the Atlantic Ocean. There were no injuries reported as a result of the incident and all personnel were accounted for.

Luna was due to reach the Moon’s orbit on October 28th, but suffered an anomaly at approximately 2:55am ET (7:55am GMT). SpaceX said that there had been an “anomaly on board” but that its teams were still investigating what happened. A spokesman for Nasa confirmed that it had been tracking debris from the launch and had subsequently lost contact with Luna. It is not yet clear whether any of the debris has landed in any populated areas.

SpaceX is a private space exploration company founded by Elon Musk in 2002. It specialises in space transport services and was responsible for sending 12 commercial satellites into orbit from Cape Canaveral Air Force Station on Wednesday morning. This is just one of many launches planned by SpaceX this year as part of its $1 billion contract with Nasa.
