Who is Kim Mi Soo?

Kim Mi Soo served as the first female president of South Korea from 2017 until 2021. She was born on September 15th 1953 and graduated from Yonsei University with a degree in English Literature before going on to study law at Sejong University.

What did Kim Mi Soo do before becoming president?

After graduating from university, Kim went into politics and became a member of the Democratic Party. She served as an aide for former President Chung Do-Hwan before being elected as an MP for Seoul Central District #2. In 1993, she became the chairwoman for both the Democratic Party Women’s Affairs Committee and its Policy Research Committee.

In 1996, she was appointed as Minister of Gender Equality by President Park Geun-Hye but resigned after just three months due to allegations that she had used her position for personal gain.

In 2008, Kim made history by becoming South Korea’s first female foreign minister when President Lee Myung-Bak appointed her.

She then served two terms as governor of Gyeonggi Province between 2010 and 2016 before being elected as South Korea’s first female president following Park Geun-Hye’s impeachment.
