Keyontae Johnson collapsed during a practice session at Michigan State University on August 20th, 2019.

Former Michigan State University (MSU) football player Keyontae Johnson collapsed during a practice session on August 20th, 2019. The former wide receiver was immediately rushed to the hospital, where he was diagnosed with an enlarged heart. He was later released from the hospital and is currently recovering at home.

It’s unclear what caused Keyontae Johnson’s heart to enlarge. While his enlarged heart isn’t necessarily uncommon for someone his age, it can be dangerous if left untreated. One of the most common causes of an enlarged heart is cardiomyopathy, which is a disease that causes the heart muscle to become stretched and thinned out. Cardiomyopathy can also cause fluid to build up in the lungs or around the heart.

According to The Washington Post, cardiomyopathy affects 1 in 500 people in America. While some people with cardiomyopathy may never experience any symptoms or complications from their condition, others can experience severe symptoms that require medical attention.
