John Gruden resigned as Raiders head coach after seven seasons.

After a long and storied career in the NFL, John Gruden has finally stepped away from coaching. The 53-year-old left his post as head coach of the Oakland Raiders on January 5th, 2021. The news was a shock to many fans and followers of the NFL, as Gruden had led the Raiders to three straight AFC West titles in his first three seasons at the helm. But despite being beloved by Raider Nation, it seems that even Gruden couldn’t resist the pull of television for long.

Gruden joined ESPN in 2009 after spending nine years with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers as their head coach. He was also a Super Bowl winning assistant coach with the team before moving into television. When he returned to coaching with Oakland in 2014, many wondered if he would ever return to broadcasting.

After a disappointing 7-9 season for Oakland this year, it became clear that Gruden had not fully committed himself to football once again. It was announced on January 5th that he would be stepping down from his position with Oakland at season’s end.
