New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern has announced that she is pregnant with her first child and will be taking a six-week break from work. Ardern made the announcement on Facebook and said that her partner Clarke Gayford would take care of their baby full-time during her leave. She is due to give birth in June 2019, which means that she will miss the first week of parliament after its summer recess. The 37-year-old said: “I am not the first woman to work and have a baby, I know these are special circumstances but there are many women who have done it well before I have.”

Ardern became New Zealand’s youngest prime minister when she took office in October 2017 at the age of 37. In January 2018, Ardern revealed that she had been in a relationship with television presenter Clarke Gayford for nine years.

Why did Jacinda Ardern retire?

Prime Minister Jacinda Arden was elected leader of the Labour Party on 1 August 2017 after Andrew Little resigned as leader following poor polling results. Although there were no other contenders for leadership, it was still considered an upset victory for many given that many had expected Grant Robertson to win. During this time, Robertson served as deputy leader under Little. On 26 July 2018, Labour Party members voted unanimously to make Robertson deputy leader under Arden.
