HBO Max is the new name for the streaming service that will replace HBO Now in 2022.
HBO Max is set to be the new name of HBO’s upcoming streaming service, which will replace HBO Now. The network has yet to announce a release date for the platform, but it is expected to launch in late 2022. This means that fans of Game of Thrones and Westworld may have a while to wait before they can access their favourite shows on the new platform.
What is HBO Max?
The upcoming streaming service will combine all of Time Warner’s television networks into one subscription-based platform, including WarnerMedia’s own premium cable channels (HBO and Cinemax), as well as Warner Bros. Television Group’s (WBTVG) portfolio of entertainment programming, including TNT, TBS and truTV. It will also include films from Turner Entertainment and DC Entertainment, along with other assets from Time Warner’s Turner Sports division. This includes sports media properties such as NBA TV Canada, NCAA March Madness Live and PGA Tour Live.
Why was it renamed?
The decision to rebrand came after Time Warner announced that it would be merging with AT&T on October 22nd 2020. The move allowed AT&T to acquire 100% ownership of HBO after purchasing an additional 10% stake in 2018. As part of the deal, AT&T acquired all outstanding shares in Time Warner Inc., which gave them control over several assets including CNN and The CW Network.
