Gas prices have increased by $0.20 per gallon after a Department of Energy and Climate Change announcement in May 2021. The increase will see the average cost of gas rise from $2.50 to $2.70 per gallon, which will affect most Americans’ everyday lives and their wallets.
What caused the gas price hike?
The price hike was caused by the DOE’s decision to raise the maximum allowable sulfur content in gasoline from 30 parts per million (ppm) to 50 ppm, which was announced on May 20th, 2021.
Why did they raise the limit?
“This is a necessary step to help reduce air pollution and protect public health,” said Environmental Protection Agency Administrator Andrew Wheeler in a statement regarding the change.
