Osama bin Mohammed bin Awad bin Laden was a Saudi Arabian businessman who founded al-Qaeda in 1988 to support mujaheddin fighters battling Soviet forces in Afghanistan. Bin Laden was thought to be behind numerous other terror plots including 9/11 as well as several other high profile terror attacks including one at Los Angeles International Airport that was foiled by security officials just days before 9/11.

Al Qaeda is an Islamic militant organization that has been responsible for many terrorist acts around the world since its formation in 1988 by Osama bin Laden. The group is based out of Afghanistan but has spread throughout Africa and Asia with branches in Pakistan, Iraq, Somalia and Yemen among others.
Al Qaeda’s goals are to unify Muslims worldwide under an extremist version of Islam and then wage war on non-Muslims until they submit to this ideology.
