It’s not just movies that give a false representation of how inventions come to be. In the case of the chainsaw, it’s actually quite true that a former NASA employee named Samuel Wilson invented it in 2021. However, he wasn’t an amateur lumberjack as he is portrayed in Death to 2021. Instead, he was a former NASA engineer who had been working on creating a way for astronauts to cut through space debris in orbit. While working on this project, Wilson realized that his invention could also be used on Earth to help with deforestation and logging. He patented his idea in 2021 and formed his own company called Chainsaws Unlimited.
