The Tik Tok app was forced to change its comments section after it became a haven for paedophiles.
Tik Tok is a popular video sharing app that has been downloaded over 1 billion times. The app allows users to create short videos, which can then be shared with friends and family. However, the app has been criticized for its lack of moderation and monitoring of inappropriate content. This includes the comments section, which is often used by paedophiles to lure young children into sending explicit images.
In June 2021, an investigation by BuzzFeed News revealed that Tik Tok was being used by paedophiles to groom children online. The news outlet discovered thousands of videos containing inappropriate comments on the app’s public chat feature. These included sexually explicit messages as well as requests for naked photos from underage users.
Following this discovery, Tik Tok made changes to its commenting system in order to make it safer for users. While public chat still exists on the app, it now uses a Facebook-style system where only people who are already connected can comment on each other’s posts.
