Bristol’s pioneering £1.5 million ‘Bike Share for Everyone’ project has been canceled.

Bristol City Council has announced that its Bike Share for Everyone (BGMI) project will be canceled, despite having already invested £1.5 million in the scheme. The council is now asking residents to come up with ideas on how it should spend the money instead.

What is Bike Share for Everyone?

BGMI, which was first announced in April 2019, was intended to provide a “seamless and affordable way to hire a bike” and would have included “around 200 bikes available at around 40 docking stations around Bristol city centre, with an additional 20 docking stations in surrounding areas such as Bedminster and Knowle West”.

Bristol City Council, which was hoping to become the first UK city outside of London to offer a bike share scheme, had already invested £1.5 million into the scheme ahead of its launch this summer. The council had planned to provide grants for up to 40% of the costs of new bikes and docking stations, with businesses paying for any remaining costs.
