The US flag and the UK flag are flying at half-staff today, as a mark of respect for those who died in the terrorist attack in London.

Flags are flying at half-staff across the United States and the United Kingdom today, as a mark of respect for those who died in yesterday’s terrorist attack in London. The American flag is being flown at half-staff until sunset on October 29th, according to CNN. Meanwhile, the UK government has said that flags will fly at half-staff until sunset on October 30th. This is an unusual step for both countries to take. Although it’s not unheard of for flags to be flown at half-staff when foreign nationals die abroad, it’s not something that happens often. In fact, according to CBS News, this is only the third time that both countries have flown their flags at half-staff.

The other two times occurred after 9/11 and after the Manchester Arena bombing in 2017.

Why do they fly their flags at half staff?

The idea behind flying flags at half staff is to show respect for those who have died or suffered a great loss. In this case, there were five fatalities from yesterday’s attack and many more injuries from people who were injured by the blast or by falling debris.
