Rail workers are striking over plans to privatise the railways.

Train drivers, guards and maintenance workers are striking on October 27th in a dispute over plans to privatise the railways. As part of its budget announcement, Chancellor of the Exchequer Rishi Sunak announced that the government would be looking into selling off some of Britain’s railway lines to private companies. This was met with opposition from many people, including rail workers who were already on strike at the time.

What is a rail strike?

A rail strike is when workers at a train station or railway company go on strike. In this case, it means that members of ASLEF, RMT and TSSA unions will not be working for Southern Railways or Greater Anglia trains.

Why are they striking?

The unions are striking over plans to privatise the railways. The government has said that it wants to sell off some railway lines in order to pay for improvements and upgrades on others. The unions believe that privatisation will lead to job losses and poor service quality.
