The concept of April Theses was put forward by Vladimir Lenin in 1917.
Vladimir Lenin, the leader of the Russian Revolution, is credited with introducing the concept of April Theses. Although he had many other achievements during his lifetime, Lenin’s name is most commonly associated with the October Revolution and his leadership of the Soviet Union. However, it was not until 1917 that Lenin introduced his now famous idea of April Theses.
What are April Theses?
April Theses were introduced by Vladimir Lenin in 1917 as a response to Russia’s ongoing revolution. They were written on April 4th and released to party members on April 10th. In them, Lenin outlined 14 points that he believed would be necessary for any revolution to succeed.
What did Lenin say in his April Theses?
“1) We must immediately start preparing for a new revolution in Russia.”
Lenin’s first point emphasised that it was vital for Russia to undergo another revolution as soon as possible. He explained that this would allow the Bolsheviks (the name given to those who supported him) to take power and overthrow the Provisional Government (which had replaced Tsar Nicholas II). He also said that only an armed uprising could ensure their success.
“2) We must not waste time on negotiations with those who have already shown their hand against us.”
Lenin believed that it was foolish for revolutionaries to waste time trying to negotiate with people who had already demonstrated their opposition towards them. This point reflected his belief that anyone who opposed them should be removed from power.
