Why is Palace Brighton a Derby

Palace Brighton was built in the late 19th century and is a Grade II listed building.

The Palace Brighton is a Grade II listed building located in Brighton, England. The building was built in the late 19th century and has been owned by many different people throughout its history. It has even been used as a museum and as an art gallery, but it is now used as a hotel. Here’s why Palace Brighton is called Palace Brighton.

What is Palace Brighton?

Palace Brighton was built in 1882 by businessman Thomas Read Kemp. It was designed by renowned architect Sir Arthur Blomfield, who also designed the Royal Pavilion, which sits just across the road from Palace Brighton. The two buildings are similar in design and were both built for wealthy individuals.

Why does it have that name?

The name of this famous building comes from its original owner Thomas Read Kemp, who had made his fortune from mining coal during the Industrial Revolution.
Kemp had previously owned another property called Read House, which he sold to move into Regency style. When he moved into his new home on Marine Parade, Kemp named it “Read House”, but due to confusion with nearby properties that already carried that name he changed it to “Palace”. He also added “Brighton”, presumably to make sure people knew where he lived.

The reason for this confusion might be because “Read House” was not an uncommon name at the time, with another large Regency house on nearby “Clifton Hill”. This other property still exists today under its original name.
