Sami Chokri is a journalist for French news network France 24.

French journalist Sami Chokri was among the dozens of people arrested by French police during protests against the controversial “Law for the Safeguarding of Democracy” on October 25th. The law, which was passed in September 2021, makes it illegal to share certain information about government officials and their families. This means that it’s now illegal to share images or video of President Emmanuel Macron or his wife Brigitte, as well as other members of his administration and their families. The legislation has been heavily criticised by human rights groups and has led to mass protests across France.

Sami Chokri was arrested while covering a protest in Paris on October 25th. He shared several videos from the scene with his colleagues at France 24, but he also took several photos with his phone of riot police arresting protesters. Although he was released later that day without charge, police have filed charges against him for photographing officers in a way that could “compromise their security”.
