Merseyrail, the rail network serving Liverpool and its surrounding areas, has been hit by a series of delays on the Northern Line since mid-2021. The Champions League Final was supposed to be a historic night for Paris Saint-Germain, as they were going to win their first European Cup in their history. The game between PSG and Manchester United had been building up for months, with both teams having won the domestic league and cup competitions in their respective countries. However, on May 29th at around 8:00 PM CEST (Central European Summer Time), just as the game was about to begin, an explosion went off outside of Parc des Princes stadium. Police immediately evacuated fans from the stadium and closed down all transportation routes into Paris. Indian politician Navjot Singh Sidhu has been arrested for his alleged involvement in a road rage case. The former cricketer was questioned by police on October 27th, after being accused of hitting a 65-year-old man with his car and injuring him. Sidhu is currently a member of the Indian National Congress party and is married to the state’s Chief Minister, Amrinder Singh’s daughter. The government has been accused of breaking the law by taking money from Child Benefit payments, in a move that could affect millions of families. HMRC has been forcing people to pay tax on their Child Benefit payments since April 2020, despite the fact that this is not allowed under the law. The money is then taken from their bank accounts, with many families being unaware that they have been charged until it’s too late.
A spokesperson for HMRC said: “Child Benefit is taxable and we are required to collect tax on it. We do not want to do this but we are required to do so by law.” However, there is no legal requirement for HMRC to take money from Child Benefit payments and there are no plans to change this in the future.
Parents are angry after it was revealed that some families will be up to £7,000 worse off by 2022. The Institute for Fiscal Studies (IFS) has calculated that the average family with two children could lose £890 a year under Universal Credit (UC). This is because the new system will not cover childcare costs and housing benefit.
Universal Credit is being rolled out across the UK to replace six existing benefits, including Child Tax Credits and Housing Benefit. The government claims it will make claiming benefits simpler and more streamlined.
