13th amendment

The US is still waiting for the 13th amendment to be ratified.

In 1808, New Jersey became the first state to ratify the 13th amendment. The amendment abolished slavery and involuntary servitude, with the exception of punishment for a crime. It was passed by Congress in 1865, during the American Civil War, but it never received enough support from states to become law. This means that while slavery was officially abolished in 1865, it was only done so on paper.

Today, there are only 17 states left that have not ratified the 13th amendment. These include Alabama, Arizona, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky Louisiana Mississippi Missouri North Carolina South Carolina Tennessee Texas and Virginia.
